BHS CLAWS Program Earns NYSSBA Champions of Change Recognition

BHS CLAWS Program Earns NYSSBA Champions of Change Recognition

Program Praised For Meaningful Impact on Students.

Brewster Central School District was recognized at the May 12, 2026 Board of Education meeting with a prestigious Champions of Change award from the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) for Brewster High School’s innovative CLAWS program.

The award was presented by NYSSBA Area 10 Director Sheryl Brady and celebrates school districts and BOCES across New York State for transformative initiatives that make a meaningful impact on students.

Representing Brewster High School at the ceremony were CLAWS Program Co-Coordinators Glenn Palmieri and Jess McCann, who accepted the recognition alongside Superintendent Dr. Michelle Gosh.

CLAWS, which stands for Career Learning And Workplace Skills, is designed to provide students with meaningful workplace experiences connected to relevant academic coursework across a variety of career fields. The program helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world experience while strengthening partnerships between students, schools, and the broader community.

“The awards committee looks out in the community for programs that highlight positive programming in schools, and the CLAWS program provides students with real-life experience, putting their learning into action so that they can learn to fix things themselves or possibly pursue a career in the trades. The program also connects students with community businesses,” said Brady during the presentation.

Dr. Gosh reflected on the significance of the recognition, saying, “We know special things are happening here in Brewster every day. We see it. But, it's nice to be acknowledged externally. It means the world to us.”

The district expressed its gratitude to NYSSBA for recognizing the impact of the CLAWS program and its commitment to preparing students for future success through hands-on learning opportunities and community engagement.
