BHS Students Are Making A Difference

BHS Students Are Making A Difference

Raised $10,122 for Wells In South Sudan

Brewster High School students are changing the world. For the ninth year, they have participated in We Walk For Water, in which they walk the footsteps of the children of South Sudan who have to make a daily walk for water–1.5 hours to “the pond” and then 1.5 hours “back to their village.” The day is the culmination of a fundraiser in which they have raised close to $10,122 this year–enough money for two more wells. Since 2017, BHS has raised approximately $52,00 for eight wells in South Sudan through Water for South Sudan. It was been an epic effort and journey for students.

Their engagement grew from the books they read in English class: “Running for My Life,” “They Poured Fire on Us,” and “A Long Walk To Water.”

“The work you are doing today is changing lives and really does make a difference,” said organizer and English teacher Jessica Juska.

During a morning program, students heard from speaker Sheetal Panday, Director of Communications for Water For South Sudan, who explained the impact direct access to clear water has on communities–health, education, economic opportunities and overall well being.

Wearing sneakers and We Walk for Water t-shirts, students and staff went out to the track to start their walk. By the end of the walk, some students had walked up to fifteen miles!

Top fundraisers were awarded Water for South Sudan hats and signed copies of “A Long Walk For Water.” Nathaly Nunez is currently the top fundraiser this year, bringing in $686.00.
